Subject-Verb Agreement

1.      Each, every, any, no, none/no one, either, neither, one of + Singular verb
Examples:
a)      Each of them (be) standing.
Ans.: Each of them is standing.
b)      Either of the boys (have) done this.
Ans.: Either of the boys has done this.
c)      Neither of the two lights (be) working.
Ans.: Neither of the two lights is working.
d)      No bus and no train (be) seen.
Ans.: No bus and no train is seen.
e)      One of the boys (be) present yesterday.
Ans.: One of the boys was present yesterday.
2.      Expressions of time, money, weight, distance + Singular verb
Examples:
a)      Two years (be) a long time to wait.
Ans.: Two years is a long time to wait.
b)      Fifty miles (be) a long distance.
Ans.: Fifty miles is a long distance.
c)      Five hundred taka (be) enough for me.
Ans.: Five hundred taka was enough for me.
d)      Five liters of water (be) needed to prepare the food.
Ans.: Five liters of water is needed to prepare the food.
e)      Twenty hours (be) required to make the boiler.

3.      Pants, scissors, spectacles, trousers, glasses, aristocracy, aborigines + Plural verb
Examples:

c)      My glasses (have) become old.

4.      Pair/Dozen/Hundred/Thousand + Pants, scissors, spectacles, trousers, glasses, aristocracy, aborigines + Singular verb
Examples:
a)      A dozen of scissors (be) there.
Ans.: A dozen of scissors was there.
b)      A dozen of bananas (be) sufficient.

5.      Mathematics, economics, politics, civics, physics, news, whereabouts + Singular verb
Examples:

6.      Country, Play, Book, Article, Movie + Singular verb
Examples:

7.      In case of  phrases:

8.      Noun and Noun:
                                 i.            ( 1 + 1) = 2: Plural Verb (It means the two different things);
                               ii.            ( 1 + 1)  = 1: Singular Verb (It means the same thing);
Examples:
a)      Arif and Sharif  (go) to market.
Ans.: Arif and Sharif are going to market.
b)      Bread and butter (be) my favourite breakfast.

c)      Basir and Nasir (be) two brothers.

9.      The + adjective used as common noun + Plural verb
Examples:
a)      The poor (be) born to suffer.

10.  Aristocracy, nobility, poultry, cattle, people, folk, gentry + Plural verb
Examples:

c)      The circumstances (be) true.

11.  It is subject + relative pronoun + verb agrees with the subject after “it is”
Examples:

c)      He is one of those who (not smoke).

12.  Collective Noun: Single opinion + singular verb; Different opinion + plural verb
Examples:

b)      The committee (be) unanimous.

13.  Infinitive/Verbal noun/Gerund + Singular verb
Examples:

14.  Two subjects joined by along with / together with / as well as / in addition to / accompanied by / besides: Verb agrees with the 1st subject
Examples:

b)      Sadia besides her friends (be) present in the class.

c)      The Prime Minister accompanied by the ministers (be) discussing on a matter.

15.  Two subjects joined by either ….. or / neither ……….. nor/ not only ……… but also: Verb agrees with the 2nd subject
Examples:
a)      Either you or he (have) gone to the party.
Ans.: Either you or he has gone to the party.
b)      Neither she nor I (have) attended the meeting.
Ans.: Neither she nor I have attended the meeting.
c)      Either the teacher or the students (be) responsible.
Ans.: Either the teacher or the students are responsible.
d)      Neither she nor I (be) going to the competition.

e)      Neither the moon nor the stars (be) visible.

f)        Not only Fahim but also his friends (have) gone to Dhaka.

g)      Not only Shimul but also his friends (be) responsible for this.

16.  If the subject is “few”, “all”, “many”, “both”, “several”, and “some”, then the verb will be plural form.
Examples:
a)      Few (be) attended in the class.
Ans.: Few are attended in the class.
b)      Many students (be) absent today.
Ans.: Many students are absent today.
c)      All (be) requested to take the seat.
Ans.: All are requested to take the seat.
d)      Several students (have) left the class.
Ans.: Several students have left the class.
e)      Both of them (be) responsible.
Ans.: Both of them are responsible.
17.  In case of English Proverb: All + singular verb
Examples:
a)      All that glitters (be) not gold.
Ans.: All that glitters is not gold.
b)      All (be) well that end is well.
